The Lugansk region is a densely populated territory of Ukraine.
The most urbanized is the southern part of the region. The main feature is a great number of small cities in which about 20 % of urban population live. The region has the 5th place in Ukraine in population, except Kiev, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkov regions.
Population structure
According to the last All-Ukrainian population census the total of number of population in Lugansk region is 2,546.2 thousand people.
The number of urban population of the region makes 2,190.8 thousand people, or 86 %, rural – 355.4 thousand people, or 14 %.
The number of men in the region makes 1,169.9 thousand people, or 45.9 %, women - 1376,3 thousand people, or 54.1 %.
The working population of region makes 843,771 people, the able-bodied population makes 95 % of them. The greatest quantity of the population (35 %) is engaged in extracting and manufacturing industries, in the sphere of social activity 20 %, in trade - 12 %, in different services – 8 %
National structure. In the region representatives of more than 120 nationalities live. In national structure of the population of our region the overwhelming majority makes Ukrainians - 58 % from total, Russian – 39 %. Among representatives of other nationalities the most numerous are Byelorussians (little bit more than 1 %), Tatars, Jews, Moldavians, Armenians, and Poles.
In language structure the region is mainly Russian-speaking - Russian is defined as native for 68,8 % of the population, Ukrainian - 30 %
According to the Public service of employment the number of the unemployed population on the account of this establishment on February 1, 2010 was 18.4 thousand people. From the specified number of citizens there is more than half (54.3 %) were women, over third – the youth at the age of less then 35.
The official status of the unemployed on the mentioned date was 95.3 % of the unemployed citizens. Among the unemployed every second took a job of a worker, every third - a post of the employee, and every seventh - a job which did not demand special vocational training.
The number of the registered unemployed on February 1, 2010 made 17.5 thousand person.
On January 1, 2010 in Lugansk region, on preliminary data, there lived 2,311.6 thousand inhabitants, from them 2,003.2 thousand – in urban districts, 308.4 thousand – in rural districts. During 2009 population of the region was reduced on 20.2 thousand people, due to the natural reduction on 17.6 thousand, migratory – on 2.6 thousand people.
Population migration
Migratory reduction of the population during 2008 is registered in 20 districts of the region. The greatest level of migratory reduction was in Antratsit district, the most intensive migratory increase in population is registered in Stanichno-Lugansk district.
The balance of migration in the region continues to be formed basically as a result of the migratory exchange with other areas of Ukraine and the CIS.
Among the former inhabitants of Ukraine and other regions, which have arrived, made 82.7 %, immigrants of the CIS countries – 15.5 %. Among those who left the majority (82.8 %) is in the other regions of Ukraine, and the CIS - 15.3 %.
