Lugansk

• General information
  Lugansk is a city of regional significance, an administrative centre Lugansk region. From 1935 till 1958 and during 1970-1990 it was Voroshilovgrad.It is situated on northern slopes of Donetsk range, in the valley of the river Lugan.
• History
  Lugansk occupies a particular place in Donbass' history. On the 14th of November, 1795 Bill of the Katherine II "About the establishing of the smelting plant in Donetsk near the river Lugan and about he establishing of coal breaking" was issued.
• Economic development
  Modern Lugansk is a large industrial centre of Donbass. The city has large capabilities and considerable economical potential, which is the basis of its development.
• Social development
  Lugansk is a city of science and students. The first pedagogical institute (Donetsk institute of education) in Donbass was opened here in 1923. Today, it is Lugansk Pedagogical University named after Taras Shevchenko.
