The Belokurakinsky district has glorious history and culture. In 1700, coming back from the second campaign to Azov, Peter I in the company of the prince B.I.Kurakin, stopped to have a rest on the mountain at which bottom the clean and transparent river with beautiful coast and snow-white cretaceous bottom (from which the name White originated) smoothly flowed. Peter I liked beautiful, but still wild district. Then Peter I in honour of the respect for the prince has presented him these land. Prince Kurakin in 1700 founded here a small village which received the name from the river and surnames of the prince - Bilo-Kurakino.
Now it is the regional centre with the enterprises of the local industry, cultural and community establishments. The area of the district is 1.44 thousand sq. m. (5,4 % of territory of the region).
The population is 23.8 thousand people, (in Belokurakino - 8 thousand people). In administrative distribution the district has 56 settlements, 2 settlement and 13 rural councils. Ukrainians make 87 % of the population, Russian - 11 %. The others are Byelorussians, Moldavians, Tatars, Armenians, Gypsies, Bolgarians etc.
The District is located on the hills of Central Russian height. Its surface is plain. There are minerals of quartz, sand, sources of chloride-nitrogen water. Grounds are fertile, the most part is made with chernozem.
The basis of industrial complex of the district makes 124 enterprises of different spheres and patterns of ownership.
The largest industrial enterprises:
- Open Company "Belokurakinsky" (manufacturing and processing of fruit, berries, vegetables); - Open Company "Belokurakinsky elevator"; - "Belokurakinsky milk factory"; - Bakery Belokurakinsky RSS; - Branch factory of the bakery "Caravan"; - "VELF" (manufacturing of fruit and mineral water); - 3 tractor stations, equipped with highly productive foreign machines.
Agriculture
In the district there are some basic agrofirms and farms, at which 104.7 thousand ha of rural grounds are cultivated. The basic products are wheat, corn, barley, millet, sunflower. In animal industries the basic role plays meat and milk cattle breeding, pig and poultry breeding, and beekeeping. The basic branches of the food-processing industry: milk, meat, vegetable production etc.. |
