General information

Lugansk region is the sports region rich with sports talents. During many years sport was and is an integral part of the region, and all the country is proud of our sportsmen. But sports records and achievements change all the time.
For the first time the Ukrainian sportsmen in the structure of the combined team of the USSR have taken part in the 1952 Olympic Games Lugansk region has given the world ten Olympic champions: N.Chuzhikova, V.Belyaeya, A.Chukanova, V.Krivova and F.Lashchenova, O. and V. Bryzgins, O.Kucherenko, G.Misyutina, I. Korobchinskogo. (According to the site of Lugansk Regional Branch of National Olympic Committee of Ukraine).
In 1960 on the XVII Olympic Games in Rome Lugansk sportsman Valery Brumel has taken the second place.
In 1964 on the XVIII Olympic Games in Tokyo N.Chuzhikov from Lisichansk won the first gold medal, becoming the Olympic champion in rowing on a kayak and canoe.

Our fellow countrymen are such well-known sportsmen:
Valery Brumel – the silver prize-winner of the XVII Olympics and the champion of the XVIII Olympic Games;
Vladimir Musalimov – the bronze prize-winner of the XIX Olympic Games, boxing;

Vladimir Smirnov – the champion, the silver and bronze prize-winner of the XXII Olympic Games, fencing;
Sergey Bubka – the champion of the XXIV Olympic Games, track and field;
Alexander Rymanov – the champion of the XXIV Olympic Games, handball;
Sergey Mindirgasov – the silver prize-winner of the XXIV Olympic Games, fencing.
Fifty six representatives of Lugansk region took part in eleven Olympic Games in twelve kinds of sports. They won 22 gold, 10 silver, 14 bronze medals.
For preservation of the Olympic traditions in 1995 the Lugansk Regional Branch of National Olympic Committee is created.
Lugansk region tries to develop those kinds sports which traditions have already developed in our region, for this purpose, in 2007 The Program of development of physical training and sports in Lugansk region in 2008–2011 which allows to define strategy, tactics of development of sports has been adopted.
Today in the region the great work on preservation and development of sports base is being done. These are 60 stadiums, 1,839 game and athletic fields, 41 swimming pool, 31 of which are roofed, 965 sports halls, 963 units for physical and health improving activity, 1 horse riding complex, 1 ice palace and 3 constructions with the artificial ice.
Total number of sports objects is 5 thousand units.
There are 75 sports schools for children and youth, in which more than 35 thousand sportsmen are engaged.
Four physical culture and sport societies work on the territory of the region: sports societies "Ukraine", "Dynamo", "Kolos" and "Spartacus".
Combined teams of Lugansk region have taken part in 464 championships, Cups of Ukraine and All-Ukrainian competitions. In the structure of combined teams of Ukraine our sportsmen participated in 25 championships, Cups of the World and European Cups.
