Industry

The Lugansk region makes a powerful part of the economic potential of Ukraine. The favourable geographical position, affinity of sources of raw material and commodity markets, diversified industry, developed network of transport communications, high population density give the region conclusive advantages comparing with other regions of the country. The region takes the exclusive leading place in Ukraine in many kinds of industrial activity: coal mining, primary processing of oil, release of mineral oil, nitric fertilizers, calcium soda, synthetic pitch and plastic, and windowpanes. The industrial potential of the region is a diversified complex with leading branches of the heavy industry. The fuel and energy complex is in the lead. The basic role belongs to the mining industry. The industry of the region is represented also by the enterprises of mechanical engineering, chemical, petrochemical, food, and textile. In the region three large industrial units are formed. Specialization of Lugansk unit is represented by enterprises of mechanical engineering, metal working and light industry; Аlchevsk and Stakhanov by enterprises coal, metallurgical and machine-building; Lisichansk, Rubezhnoye and Severodonetsk by enterprises of the chemical and petrochemical industry.

Coal mining industry
In Lugansk region 43 % of all Ukrainian power coal is extracted. Future of the region belongs to this branch. In the state distribution of work Lugansk region provides 31 % of extraction of bituminous coal
Oil refining industry
In the oil refining branch of the region about 4 thousand people are engaged, in the gas branch - more than 6 thousand people. The region provides 28 % of primary processing of oil and release of mineral oil in the country.
Gas industry
Resources of natural gas are estimated approximately by 19 billion m3. The basic resources are in Alkhovoye and Vergunskoye. During last years in the regiona a number of oil fields are opened.
Electric power industry
The enterprises of electric power system of the region make about 40 % of electric energy which is consumed in the region. The electric power industry uses the local coal and gas and produces 2,400 thousand kW in Lisichansk, Severodonetsk, Shterovka Thermal Power Station and the Lugansk State District Power Station.
Machine-building industry
The second place on the volume of production takes Machine-building metal machining
Metallurgical industry
Black metallurgy of the Lugansk region works on the basis of coke-chemical industry (Stakhanov, Alchevsk) concentrated iron is brought from Krivoiy Rog, magnesium from Nikopol using the gumboils and fire proof of the Donetsk region
Chemical industry
Lugansk region provides Ukraine with 12.3 % of nitric fertilizers (mineral fertilizers - 284,300 tons), 22 % of soda ash, 39,1 % of synthetic resin and plastic
Build industry
The building complex of Lugansk region makes about 300 building organizations, 37 enterprises of building industry of various patterns of ownership and about 900 enterprises of small business
Wood industry
Wood industry is introduced by production of log sawing (wood sawing industry), cardboard paper (celluloid - cardboard industry). These factories are situated in Lugansk, Kremennaya, Rubezhnoye, KrasniyLuch
Light industry
The light industry of the region is represented with shoe, woolen, linen (Lugansk), socks and stockings (Rubezhnoye) branches, manufacturing of fur-tree toys (Lisichansk), and also enterprises of the clothing industry: Lugansk, Stakhanov, Alchevsk, Krasny Luch, Sverdlovsk, Lisichansk.
Food Industry
The food-processing industry is a part of agriculture of the region.
